(g) What will happen if time becomes the poet’s guest?
(h) What do the phrases “blind in the womb” and “in the tomb” suggest about time?
Answer: 8. a. The poet calls time an ‘old gipsy man’ as it has similarities with the gypsies. The gypsies wander from one place to another. Similarly, time goes on. It travels from one city to another and one age to another like an old gipsy man.
b. Mary was probably a daughter of a peasant or a fisherman who live beside the bank of the river Dee. She went to the bank of the river Dee to bring the cattle back home as the weather turned very foul.
c. In the poem, the girl named Mary got drowned in the river Dee while bringing the cattle back home.
d. The poet stopped by the woods though it was dark and he was alone, because he wanted to observe the natural beauty and snowfall in the woods. He wanted to enjoy the serenity of the dark, deep and yet lovely woods.
e. The horse considers it a mistake to stop by the woods, because there was no farmhouse nearby. Also, the woods were away from society and civilization.
f. In the poem ‘Time, You Old Gipsy Man’, the repetition of the poet’s request implies the struggle against time’s relentless march. There’s a sense of urgency and regret as time continues its journey, leaving everything behind.
g. If time becomes the poet’s guest, the poet will honour it with many things. He will give it silver bells for its horse, the goldsmith will make it a golden ring, the peacocks will bow to it, little boys will sing for it, and sweet girls will adorn it with many flowers.
h. About time, the phrases ‘blind in the womb’ and ‘in the tomb’ suggest that time continues to progress toward inevitable ends. Birth and death are integral parts of existence, the cyclical nature of life. So, with time, everything will perish indicating the transitoriness of everything.
