Arsenic Pollution: A Silent Killer
Day by day arsenic problem is becoming acute in our country. Many people are becoming victims of this silent killer. Arsenic poisoning occurs when its intake crosses the tolerable limit. Maximum tolerable limit is 0.05 milligram per 1. Contamination leads to appearance of black spots on human skin, particularly palm and leads to hardening of toes. Intake of arsenic contaminated water over a long time harms livers, kidneys, lungs and the skin. The doctors say that there is no efficacious medicine to treat arsenic related diseases. Arsenic contamination is widespread in Bangladesh. About half of our population is under the threat of arsenic pollution. According to UNICEF survey 22% tube wells of our country risk arsenic contamination. Arsenic contamination is maximum in the southern and northeastern part of Bangladesh. It is believed that vitamins A, C and E are effective for treatment of arsenic. Surface water in ponds and rivers and rainwater are free from arsenic. After boiling they can be taken. People of our country should be aware of this poison. The government should set up deep tubewells in the villages. The unsafe tubewells should be marked red and safe ones should be marked green.

Subject: Prayer for holding a science fair.
Sir,
With due respect, we would like to lay before you the following facts for your kind consideration and necessary action. Modern age is the age of science. In every sphere of our life we feel the touch of science. The students of our college are very much interested in science. We believe that holding a science fair will enable our students to learn more about science. They will get opportunity to bring out their latent talents by presenting different projects on science. They will be able to find the ways of using science in our day to day life. We will invite different reputed colleges of the Dhaka city to participate in the fair. Our two science teachers have agreed to guide us in this regard. We will need 10,000/- taka to hold the fair successfully.
We therefore pray and hope that you would be kind enough to grant our prayer and oblige thereby.
Yours obediently
The students of X College

Mosquito Menace
Now people living in the cities are suffering acutely from mosquito menace. The problem has become so serious that it has almost paralysed normal activities of people. Students can’t give concentration on their studies. People can’t do any work sitting at their home. Even the patients of the hospitals are not safe from their clutches. Every pond and ditch of our locality has been filled with mosquito. They have become their safe breeding places. After sunset lots of mosquitoes entering the houses start biting human beings. They suck blood from human body. People use various insecticides and coil to prevent them but they are of no use. We know different diseases like dengue, malaria and elephantiasis are spread through the mosquitoes. If these diseases spread in an epidemic form, they may cause a heavy toll of human lives. The mosquitoes have destroyed the peace of human beings. The city corporation should take immediate steps to clean the ponds and spray insecticides in the area. At the same time the city dwellers should be aware and they should keep their surroundings neat and clean.

Unstable law and order situation
Recently the law and order situation of the Banani area has deteriorated much. Many gangs of criminals are active in the area. Killing, mugging, hijacking, raping and stealing have become common affairs in the area. In some cases these occur in broad daylight. People can’t move in the streets safely. Even the eve teasers disturb the school and college going girls. They do not feel secured at the time of going to schools and colleges. The peace of people has completely been shattered. The criminals demand money from the businessmen through cellphones and threaten to kill them if they deny to pay the demanded money. The whole area is now in the grip of the criminals. Some criminals are doing these anti-social activities under political shelter. The law enforcing agencies are not so active in the area. We hope that the police and RAB will be more active to arrest the born criminals to ensure people a peaceful social life.
