Question: Describe types of data transmission modes
Ans: According to the direction of data flow there are three main types of data transmission modes.
1. Unicast, 2. Broadcast, 3. Multicast
- Unicast: is a one-to-one transmission, where a message is sent from one sender to one receiver. It uses a unique destination address and generates the least amount of network traffic. It is more secure and reliable than broadcast or multicast.
Examples of unicast are email, file transfer and web browsing. - Broadcast: is a one-to-all transmission, where a message is sent from one sender to all receivers in a network. It uses a special broadcast address and generates the most amount of network traffic. It is less secure and reliable than unicast or multicast. Examples of broadcast are DHCP requests, ARP requests and network discovery. Radio, TV Broadcast.
- Multicast: is a one-to-many transmission, where a message is sent from one sender to a group of receivers. It uses a special multicast address and generates moderate network traffic. It is moderately secure and reliable than unicast or broadcast. Examples of multicast are video streaming, online gaming and group chat.
